International Students in Canada

The Canadian Immigration Minister, Mr. Sean Fraser has mentioned recently in an interview that Canada is working on developing new streams that will allow international students to obtain their permanent residency in Canada.

 

Mr. Fraser also mentioned the importance of international students in Canada as they are playing an important role in the country’s future, and are contributing to Canada’s economic success. International students have demonstrated to be a source of labor supply, and their engagement after graduation is extraordinary as the majority have a support network in Canada, prospecting employment before graduating, continually building their knowledge and talent in Canada and creating economic prosperity. 

 

If you are thinking of coming to Canada to study at College or University, now is the time for you to apply. Before coming to Canada to study, you must make sure to apply for a study permit as only few people can apply for a study permit from within Canada. 

 

Moreover, following the completion of your studies, you might be eligible to apply through the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP). This open work permit will allow you to work for any employer in Canada. The validation time of your PGWP will depend on the duration of the program you completed in Canada. Almost 75% of all PGWP holders have become permanent residents within 5 years of having obtained their PGWP. 

 

In order to be eligible, you must meet the following criterias:

 

1. Qualify as a fully vaccinated traveler. 

  • However, if you are under 18, you don’t have to be fully vaccinated. You need to study at a designated learning institutions (DLI) with an approved Covid-19 readiness plan;

 

2. Be Enrolled at a Designated Learning Institutions (DLI);

 

3. Prove sufficient fund to pay for:

  • Tuition fees;

  • Living expenses for yourself and any family members who will come with you to Canada;

  • Return transportation for yourself and any family members who will come with you to Canada;

  • No criminal record, a police certificate might be required;

  • Are in good health, a medical exam might be required;

  • Demonstrate to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires. 

Get your study permit faster through the Student Direct Stream

The legal residents of the following countries are able to get a study permit faster by applying through the Student Direct Stream. Certain eligibility requirements must also be met in order to be eligible.
